What Evil Has He Done?
April 28th, 2025
'Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!” Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”'
Matthew 27:22-23
In the verses above Pilate asks a very legitimate question, "Why, what evil has He done?". This came after he unsuccessfully tried to release Jesus instead of Barabbas, who indeed had done evil. However, the Jews decided the fate of Jesus, or at least they thought so, by saying, "Let Him be crucified". They did not answer Pilate's question, they simply let their wicked hearts come to the opening by crying out all the more saying, "Let Him be crucified." But, truly, what evil had Jesus done? None! Jesus had not done any evil. They arrested and killed an innocent men, but all this happened to fulfill the words of Isaiah the prophet, so we could have peace with God.
It's written, "'But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.'" Isaiah 53:5. Jesus did not do any evil, He did not deserve death, yet He submitted, He took the chastisement so we could have peace with Him, have our relationship restored with God. He took upon Him the chastisement for our peace. It was for you and me that Jesus accepted to suffer and die, although he did no evil. It's written, "'Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, '" Romans 5:1.
It was for you and for me that He laid down His life. He who knew no sin became sin that you, me, and we all might become the righteousness of God. May God bless you, sanctify Christ in your heart.
